APA Guide

When you write a paper in APA Style, you’re applying guidelines found in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). APA Style is a documentation style guide, which means that it provides rules for how to document sources in your academic writing. It’s one of several documentation style guides that academics use frequently. Others include the MLA (Modern Language Association) Style Manual and the Chicago Manual of Style. Each style guide provides slightly different rules for how to: 1) format the paper, 2) list references used, and 3) cite information within the body of the paper. Including a complete references page and citing information properly throughout the text is especially important because not doing so can result in unintentional plagiarism.

At Keiser University, students are required to use APA Style for any formal papers that include academic research, but it’s important to remember that there’s no such thing as an APA paper; there are only papers in APA Style. You could write the same exact paper using any of the standard documentation styles.

Below you’ll find a video and several handouts and web links aimed at helping you master the use of APA Style and avoid plagiarism. I suggest viewing the video first. Take the time to study these resources so that you can focus on the most important aspect of your writing — the content!
